Lolita City, and other alleged child porn websites, attacked by Anonymous

by Graham Cluley at Naked Security

The hacktivist collective Anonymous has declared war on internet paedophiles, attacking websites it accuses of carrying child abuse images and videos, and declaring that anyone who hosts, promotes or supports child pornography is a target.

In an operation dubbed "Operation DarkNet" or "OpDarkNet", the loosely-knit group has claimed responsibility for taking
offline over 40 websites accused of sharing child abuse material, and has published details of 1589 alleged paedophiles that had been using the websites.

In particular the hackers targeted a site called "Lolita City", and crashed the servers of its web hosting service Freedom Hosting. In a statement, Anonymous called "Lolita City" one of the "largest child pornography websites to date containing more than 100GB of child pornography".

Here is part of the statement from Anonymous that was published on the internet:

Did the Anonymous hackers do the right thing?

I don't think so. Their intentions may have been good, but take-downs of illegal websites and sharing networks should be done by the authorities, not internet vigilantes.

When 'amateurs' attack there is always the risk that they are compromising an existing investigation, preventing the police from gathering the necessary evidence they require for a successful prosecution, or making it difficult to argue that evidence has not been corrupted by hackers.

The anonymous hackers may feel they have done the right thing, but they may actually have inadvertently put more children at risk through their actions.

In addition, it's possible to conceive how releasing usernames could put entirely innocent parties at risk. After all, how likely is it that members of such websites will be using their own names as a username?

If anyone discovers evidence of child abuse online they should report it to the appropriate authorities, not take the law into their own hands.

At the same time, I recognise that members of the public may feel frustrated that action isn't taken quickly enough against online paedophiles, and not realise how long it can take for an investigation to take place and evidence to be gathered.

So, it's an interesting question - do you think Anonymous did the right thing by shutting down child porn websites?

How to properly report online child abuse

If you have information about online child abuse that you wish to report to the authorities, visit the websites of the Virtual Global Taskforce, CEOP (the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) and the IWF (Internet Watch Foundation) which provide a reporting mechanism.

Security Shield, Made out of BS!

What this infection does:

Security Shield is a rogue spyware infection that is a variant of Security Tool. This rogue is installed through; other malware, fake online programs claiming that they are anti-malware scanners or prompt that your system is infected. Once installed, on your system Security Shield will be configured to start automatically when Windows starts. Once started, it will perform a scan of your computer and state that there are numerous infections present on your computer. If you attempt, though, to remove any of these so-called infections the program will state that you first need to purchase it. In reality, all of the files it states are infections are legitimate Windows files. Therefore, do not manually delete any of the files it states are infections as you may cause Windows to not operate correctly. The following images will have indicators pointing out how far the creators of this virus went to make it seem real.

In order to protect itself, Security Shield will terminate almost all processes that you start. It does this so that you cannot launch any security programs that may have the ability to remove the infection. The message that you will see when you attempt run a program is similar to the one below:

Security Shield "cmd.exe" is infected with "Worm.Win32.Autorun.bnb". Do you want to register your copy and remove all threats now?

Just like the scan results, this infection warning is fake and should be ignored.

Revealed: NSA targeting domestic computer systems in secret test

Revealed: NSA targeting domestic computer systems in secret test

by Declan McCullagh CNET

The National Security Agency's Perfect Citizen program hunts for vulnerabilities in "large-scale" utilities, including power grid and gas pipeline controllers, new documents from EPIC show.

Newly released files show a secret National Security Agency program is targeting the computerized systems that control utilities to discover security vulnerabilities, which can be used to defend the United States or disrupt the infrastructure of other nations.

Credit (TVA)The NSA's so-called Perfect Citizen program conducts "vulnerability exploration and research" against the computerized controllers that control "large-scale" utilities including power grids and natural gas pipelines, the documents show. The program is scheduled to continue through at least September 2014.

Be Careful of what you share, especially with Facebook Home Coming around.

Facebook Home is now available for (some) Android devices, aside from its launch device, the HTC First. It is easy to understand this direction that Facebook has chosen to take. There are many users who would find something like Facebook Home useful and would like it: people who use their mobile devices primarily to connect with their Friends and share likes, updates, photos, and other such social activities.

However, people are becoming genuinely concerned about how much of our data is ending up in the hands of Internet companies. Facebook Home doesn’t collect new types of information that existing apps already don’t, as their officials went at some length to explain. The concern though is that they said nothing about the quantity of data that will be gathered. This in and of itself is of great value to Facebook; increasing the amount of data to correlate can only “improve” what Facebook knows about its users.

What we would suggest is for people to be genuinely mindful and thoughtful about what they do share online. Do you really have to share that photo? Do you really want to send this status update out into the public, where future friends, partners, and employers will be able to find it down the road? A good way to moderate the sharing of information is through privacy scanners, (which is offered for free in Google Play, and is a built-in feature in Trend Micro™ Titanium™ Security) but of course the users’ mindset would play a crucial part.

Antivirus.net, It will protect you from the net! Not!

What this infection does:

Antivirus.net is a fake computer anti-virus program that displays false information so that it can scare you into thinking that there is multiple infections in your computer. When installed antivirus.net will be configured to start automatically when you login to Windows. Once started, it will display numerous error messages when you attempt to launch programs or delete files. It will then constantly scan your computer with the program, in turn stating that there are a variety of infections that need to be removed. But the infections cannot be removed until you purchase the program.  As this program is a scam do not be scared into purchasing the program when you see its alerts. I have already had a Client that purchased the program and activated, unfortunately his Credit Information has been compromised, not only that but this infection will not remove like others once purchased. If you do purchase this contact your credit companies immediately! The infection also re-configures your internet settings proxy. This will not allow you to connect to any internet service or provider. I will add an article later in order to attempt to show the general public how to fix their proxy settings.  So be careful.
